ConnectEd vs Prof Insider: which should you use to find and email professors?

Disclosure: we make Prof Insider. What we say about ConnectEd comes from its own public pages as of September 30, 2026, listed under “How we compared” below, and from our own testing and review where noted. Prof Insider is new, and some features described here, including follow-ups and the replies inbox, are still rolling out.

Short answer: Choose ConnectEd if you want a low-cost tool that searches the web live for mentors, with a free plan and Premium at $3.99 a month. Choose Prof Insider if you're aiming at US or Canadian universities and want a stored list sorted against your resume, drafts you change by asking, and follow-ups and replies designed to sit in one inbox.

What ConnectEd is

ConnectEd is an AI cold email tool for high school and college students looking for research mentors. You describe who you want in plain English, and it searches faculty directories and lab pages on the web. It drafts an email from your resume and the mentor's research profile, sends it from your Gmail with your resume attached, and tracks the outreach.

What ConnectEd does well

  • It isn't tied to a fixed list. It says it searches any .edu, .ac.uk or institutional domain worldwide.
  • Its prices are low and published, with a free plan to start.
  • It explains its address checks: an address is marked verified only if it's on the professor's own directory page, with ORCID as the fallback.
  • Its Gmail connection is optional and send-only, and its privacy policy says it never reads your mailbox.
  • Its founders cold emailed professors in high school, and its advice speaks directly to students with no lab experience.

Where Prof Insider is different

  • Prof Insider works from its own professor database, built in-house and covering 188 US and Canadian universities, sorted into matches and skips from your resume. ConnectEd runs a fresh search each time.
  • You change a Prof Insider draft by asking for the edit in plain English.
  • ConnectEd drafts follow-ups after five days and says its tracker records replies, which arrive in your Gmail. Prof Insider is built to follow up and bring replies into one inbox.
  • Both check addresses. ConnectEd confirms an address on the directory page, checks the institution's domain and filters out generic ones like info@, falling back to ORCID. Prof Insider also flags addresses that belong to someone else.

Live web search or a stored list

ConnectEd searches when you ask. Its AI, grounded in Google Search, looks through faculty directories, lab pages and institute profiles, and you can sort results by profession, seniority, location and affiliation. The upside is reach: it says it covers any institution, and it finds professionals as well as professors.

Prof Insider uses its own professor database, built in-house, covering 188 US and Canadian schools, 26 of them in Canada, and adds recent papers where it can match them. For a professor in the UK or Asia, ConnectEd says it can search there, and Prof Insider's list doesn't reach that far.

Who each tool is written for

ConnectEd was started by students who cold emailed professors in high school, and much of its site speaks to that reader, including students with no lab experience. Its terms require users to be at least 14.

Prof Insider is for high school, undergraduate and graduate students. If you're in high school, read the guide to research experience in high school on consent forms and lab rules for minors, whichever tool you use.

Sending, follow-ups and replies

Both tools send from your own Gmail. ConnectEd attaches your resume PDF and logs each email in a tracker. After five days without a reply, it drafts a follow-up that goes out as a threaded reply once you approve it.

ConnectEd's July 2026 posts and its institutions page say the tracker records replies; its privacy policy (July 10, 2026) lists only the send permission. If reply tracking matters, check how it works in the app. Prof Insider is built to bring replies into one inbox, which would need more Gmail access than sending alone.

Price

ConnectEd's free plan includes AI-drafted emails and 3 searches a day. Premium costs $3.99 a month or $29.99 a year for unlimited searches, up to 20 results per search and priority support. Payments go through Stripe. Prof Insider hasn't published pricing yet.

Which should you choose?

Choose ConnectEd if

  • You want professors outside the US and Canada, or professionals as well as professors
  • You want a live tool today with a low, published price
  • You want Gmail to have send access only and don't need a separate replies inbox
  • You're in high school and want a tool built for that

Choose Prof Insider if

  • You're targeting US or Canadian universities and want a list sorted against your resume
  • You'd rather change a draft by asking than edit it by hand
  • You want a tool built to handle follow-ups and replies in one inbox
  • You'd rather work through a set list than run a new search each time

Common questions

Is ConnectEd free?

Yes, up to a limit. The free plan includes AI-drafted emails and 3 searches a day. Premium costs $3.99 a month or $29.99 a year for unlimited searches.

Is ConnectEd only for high school students?

No. ConnectEd says it's for high school and college students, with a minimum age of 14. It also serves counselors, career centers and programs like TRIO and McNair.

How does ConnectEd find professors' email addresses?

It reads the professor's university directory page and marks an address verified if it's found there. If it can't confirm one, it falls back to the ORCID database. Its terms still ask you to check contact details yourself.

What is a good ConnectEd alternative?

Prof Insider suits you if you want a stored list of US and Canadian professors sorted against your resume. Mentiv matches you to professors through recent papers, and Research.Mail writes an email for a professor you've already chosen.
